Babaji’s Kriya Yoga Ashram in Badrinath has been designed by two renowned vastu architects, and offers the following facilities:
- 13 Comfortable Apartments. Each apartment has about 290 square feet (27 square meters) and two beds, a kitchen, bathroom with sink, shower and toilet, hot water, space heaters, desk, kitchen tables and chairs. Clean sheets, blankets, towels and pillows are provided.
- A Meditation hall, with 110 square meters (1,184 square feet) with hardwood floor, space heaters.
- A Yoga Hall, with 120 square meters, (1,292 square feet) with tile floor, space heaters.

Young Ramaiah was educated by tutors and enjoyed the life of a member of the most elite circle in colonial India. He played golf, wore English clothes, and traveled frequently by motor car 300 kilometers north to Madras, where his father owned most of the seaside property for nearly a mile south of San Thome Cathedral. Ramaiah was interested in science and Tamil literature. While his father gambled away the family’s fortune, Ramaiah prepared himself for a university education. His father wanted him to go into business, like all good Chettiars, but Ramaiah was adamant. When he was admitted to the University of Madras, Presidency College, the most prestigious institution in south India in 1940, he appealed to his father for permission to major in the subject of geology, with a minor in Tamil studies. After some heated discussion, and after the intercession of Ramaiah’s mother, S.A. Annamalai relented and gave his consent. Ramaiah excelled in his studies and in 1944 he graduated at the very top of his class. He applied for post graduate studies in geology at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, and was accepted. His father opposed this proposal, insisting that Ramaiah begin a career in the family’s business empire. Finally,
Ramaiah succeeded in convincing his father that he should be allowed to go to America, but before doing so, but on condition that he get married first. Betrothed since several years to Solachi, a young woman whose wealthy family lived in the mansion across the street from Ananda Vilas, the marriage was celebrated and Ramaiah and his young bride began to make preparations for a long sea journey to America. However, fate intervened and Ramaiah contracted bone tuberculosis. The best English physicians were brought in to treat him, but as bone tuberculosis was and still is an incurable disease, the most they could accomplish was to arrest its further spread beyond his legs. They did so by imprisoning him in a plaster body cast, extending from his feet to his neck.By immobilizing his body in this way, the further development of the disease was expected to be arrested. He remained in this situation, hanging from the bed posts and suspended in air, for six years. His family left him alone with his young bride and a few servants, at their seaside cottage, at number 2, Arulananda Mudali Street, (now Arulandam Street), San Thome, Mylapore, Madras.
Babaji’s Kriya Yoga Order of Acharyas maintains on a charitable basis, an ashram and publishing office in Bangalore, south India. For the public it offers introductory classes, Kriya Hatha Yoga classes, a meditation room, a book store, and initiation seminars at least twice each year. For Kriya Yoga initiates it also offers regular satsang meetings.

Directions:
The Babaji’s Kriya Yoga Ashram is situated in the north-western part of Bangalore a 15 minutes drive with a Rickshaw from the Bangalore Majestic bus and train station. Coming from the airport one should use the pre-paid taxi booth/counter near the airport exit. There will be a sign and counter. Here you state your destination and there is a fixed fare to purchase a voucher for the taxi trip. You need not pay the driver or pay anything beyond this. The fare may be around Rs. 300/- . You may keep slips of paper with the name and address of the ashram to show to the counter and the taxi driver. Outside there will be specific taxis designated for pre-paid facility and there will be someone to guide you to the taxi waiting outside. This pre-paid taxi service and counter is available 24 hours a day. Taxis are available at every hour.

“Back from the pilgrimage to India, it’s impossible for me to write about the experience without limiting it. I feel very grateful for the trip organized by Satchidananda and Durga. We haven’t wasted time, we have been in very powerful places, well guided in every moment. Mother India is a land sanctified by thousand years of spiritual practices of seekers of Truth, in all its expressions and shades; there one can directly experience the peace that results from surrendering to a higher power than one’s self, the peace of being part of the mandala of the Divine Creation, where everything has its proper place. One would wish to keep this peace forever inside. Through the practice of Kriya Yoga we can, at least, create India wherever we are.
Next pilgrimage will be in 2014, so if you are interested in it, you have one year to save money and organize yourself. The trip, of course, is worth value. I hope to return again.”
